What is Share of Voice?

Share of Voice shows what percentage of all brand mentions in AI responses belong to your brand - not just how often you appear, but how dominant you are compared to your competitors.

Overview

While AI Visibility tells you how often your brand shows up in AI answers, Share of Voice (SoV) tells you how much of the total conversation you own. It compares your brand mentions to the combined mentions of every brand you track, giving you a competitive share of the AI landscape.

A high Share of Voice means your brand is the dominant voice in AI answers for your industry - even if your competitors also have strong visibility.

How Share of Voice is calculated

Surva.ai counts the total number of times each tracked brand is mentioned across all AI responses for your keywords. Your SoV is your share of that total:

Share of Voice (%) = (Your brand mentions / Total mentions of all tracked brands) x 100

Example: If your brand is mentioned 40 times across AI responses and your competitors are mentioned a combined 160 times, your Share of Voice is 20% (40 / 200 x 100).

How Share of Voice differs from AI Visibility

These two metrics answer different questions:

  • AI Visibility - How often does your brand appear? (absolute reach)
  • Share of Voice - How does your presence compare to competitors? (relative dominance)

A brand can have 60% AI Visibility but only 15% Share of Voice if competitors are mentioned far more often in the same responses. Both numbers matter.

Why Share of Voice matters

Brand authority in AI answers

Share of Voice directly reflects how dominant your brand is within your category. AI platforms learn from patterns - brands that are mentioned frequently and consistently across the web are more likely to be recommended. A growing SoV is a leading indicator of strengthening brand authority.

Competitive intelligence

Tracking SoV over time reveals when a competitor is gaining ground or losing it. A sudden drop in your Share of Voice - even if your raw Visibility is unchanged - means competitors are being mentioned more. That is an early warning sign worth acting on.
