Keywords and Topics Explained

Understand the difference between keywords, topics, and prompts in Surva.io and how to use them effectively.

Keywords, Topics, and Prompts

In Surva.ai, we use "keywords" and "topics" interchangeably. Both refer to the search queries you want to monitor. When tracking AI visibility, these keywords become the "prompts" we send to AI platforms.

What is a Keyword/Topic?

A keyword is any phrase that users might search for or ask an AI assistant. Examples:

  • "best project management software"
  • "how to improve customer retention"
  • "Asana vs Monday comparison"
  • "what is CRM"

Keywords vs Traditional SEO

Traditional SEO focuses on ranking for specific search queries. AI visibility tracking is similar but different:

Types of Keywords to Track

Informational Keywords:

  • Questions users ask when learning
  • "What is...", "How to...", "Why does..."
  • High AI visibility potential

Comparison Keywords:

  • Users evaluating options
  • "X vs Y", "best alternatives to", "top 10"
  • Critical for competitive positioning

Transactional Keywords:

  • Users ready to buy
  • "best", "pricing", "reviews"
  • High commercial intent

Brand Keywords:

  • Your brand name + modifiers
  • "[brand] reviews", "[brand] pricing"
  • Defensive monitoring

Keyword Data We Collect

For each keyword, Surva.ai collects:

  • Search Volume - Monthly searches on Google
  • CPC - Cost-per-click in Google Ads
  • Trend Score - Current search momentum (0-100)
  • Competition - How competitive the keyword is
  • AI Coverage - Which AI platforms have this keyword in their index

Keyword Limits by Plan

  • Starter - 25 keywords
  • Growth - 100 keywords
  • Business - 500 keywords

Best Practices

  1. Start focused - Begin with 10-20 high-priority keywords
  2. Mix keyword types - Include informational, comparison, and transactional
  3. Think like your customer - What would they actually ask an AI?
  4. Include competitor names - Track "[competitor] alternatives"
  5. Update regularly - Add new keywords as your market evolves
