What is AI Share of Voice?

Share of Voice (SOV) in Surva.ai measures what percentage of AI mentions your brand receives compared to all tracked competitors. It answers the question: "When AI recommends brands in my category, how often am I included?"

How Share of Voice is Calculated

The formula is straightforward:

Your SOV = (Your mentions / Total mentions across all brands) x 100

For example, if across 10 tracked keywords:

  • Your brand is mentioned 15 times
  • Competitor A is mentioned 25 times
  • Competitor B is mentioned 10 times
  • Total mentions = 50
  • Your SOV = 15/50 = 30%

What the Percentage Means

  • 0-10% - Low visibility; AI rarely mentions your brand
  • 10-25% - Moderate visibility; room for improvement
  • 25-40% - Good visibility; competitive position
  • 40%+ - Strong visibility; category leader in AI

SOV by Platform

Your overall SOV is an aggregate, but visibility varies by platform. The AI Intelligence card breaks down mentions by:

  • ChatGPT mentions
  • Perplexity mentions
  • Claude mentions
  • Gemini mentions
  • Google AI Overviews

Some brands perform better on certain platforms based on their content and citation profile.

Relative vs Absolute SOV

Surva.ai shows two perspectives:

  • Relative SOV - Your percentage vs tracked competitors only
  • Topic Coverage - Percentage of your keywords where you appear

A brand might have 50% relative SOV but only appear on 30% of tracked topics.

Tracking SOV Over Time

The AI Visibility dashboard shows SOV trends over time. Look for:

  • Upward trends - Your content strategy is working
  • Downward trends - Competitors may be gaining ground
  • Sudden drops - May indicate AI model updates or competitor moves

SOV vs Topic Coverage

Two important but different metrics:

  • SOV - When you're mentioned, what's your share?
  • Topic Coverage - How many of your keywords trigger a mention?

You might have high SOV on topics where you appear, but low coverage (you're missing from many topics).

Improving Your Share of Voice

To increase SOV:

  1. Create content targeting keywords where you're not mentioned
  2. Improve existing content to be more comprehensive
  3. Build citations from authoritative sources
  4. Ensure brand information is consistent across the web
